As we move into another sports season, we are combining the Sports Quiz
and the Q4U so everyone will have a chance to enjoy a greater variety of
questions. So, please use the "back arrow" and then
click on Q4U. Thanks.
EARLIER QUESTIONS: Eight seasons ago, these people were engaged in what sport? Mike Brunner, Rick Beimel, Joe Glatt, Hog Hoffman, Greg Smith and Bob Tyger? No winner. No guesses. Baseball was the answer. Who was the first State Wrestling Champion from Elk County? We waited for precisely the correct spelling of first and last names, but never got it, so we'll award the prize to the first one with the right last name. Rose Schaut said John Wittman, while it was Tim Wittman, close enough! He wrestled at 132 and won the title in 1986. 3/18 Claire, Vicky, Meghan, Andie, Katie, Emily, Dominique, Alli, Allie, Mandy, Allie, Laken, Teresa are on a roll. What kind of a roll? L Young of the Million Dollar Highway said they're on a winning streak, and they're members of the ECC Lady Crusaders. He wins. And, the best wishes of everyone in the area go to the team members and their fans. 2/17 Jerome "The Bus" Bettis is #5 on the All Time NFL Rushing List with over 13,000 career yards, but he never won a single season to lead the league. Who was the last Pittsburgh Steeler to lead the league? "the blazer" tells us Bill Dudley in 1946 was the last Steeler to win the NFL Rushing Title. Barry Foster finished 23 yards behind NFC rushing champ, Emmitt Smith, and Barry was tops in the AFC, with 1690 yards in 1992. Congratulations, "blazer", who doesn't want the prize, which we'll donate to the Elk County Humane Society, which has placed over 400 pets for adoption. 1/18 With Penn State in the Bowl Game, you probably think of Football when you think of PSU. But, can you name the former Penn State and NBA Basketball player who is now the Coach of an NBA Team? No winner. Bob Weiss was a Guard at PSU in the 1960s before playing for several Pro Teams in the NBA. He is currently Head Coach of the Seattle Supersonics. Former Altoona Mountain Lion Danny Fortson also plays for the Sonics. Let's go back to the 1996-1997 season- What sport and what school: Mandy Woelfel, Michelle Eberl, Jackie Levenduski, Megan Nedzinski, Shannon Dilley, Laura Neubert, Lynn Esenwine, Shelby Baker, Angela Wehler, Jamie Wilson and Lisa Mirtich. Rose Schaut was first with ECCHS Girls Softball team! 12/30/05We apologize. This was not the right answer; it was our fault. Rose received her prize, and is entitled to it, but ECCH did not start softball until several years later, and the right answer was SMAHS. Our apologies. What sport and what school? Patsy Schreiber, Rachel Herbstritt, Abby Calla, Breanna Kreckel, Elly Thompson, Cara Olewinski, Chelsey Murray, Cassie Carrow, Janet Clopp? Tom Lenox of Kersey was first with the right answer. Johnsonburg Ram Volleyball Team. Congratulations, Tom. John Baumgratz gives us a great question: Who is the only player in Class A Knothole baseball to pitch a perfect game? Hint: His nickname is the same as a type of dog. We have had a whole bunch of guesses naming another guy with the same nickname, but John knows who the kid was, because a year later, John almost duplicated the feat. Keep on trying to guess! However, it was before a player whose last name also begins with the same letter, that most people are guessing. Confused? Keep trying! The answer is not Bob "Beagle" Bauer. OK, we have to give up. The answer is Jack "Beagle" Lecker, in 1972-73. This was before "Beagle" Bauer's time in the league. Sorry No One Came Up With It. One of the best-known persons in St. Marys history was J. K. P. Hall, an attorney and early industrialist. In 1876, he organized a baseball team in St. Marys. But, he did much more than just organize the team. What else did he do? Hint: A right-handed batter who would "wait late" would hit there. Answer: Mr. Hall also played Left Field on the Team. No answer. So, we'll move to a new question. Many years ago, there was a St. Marys Baseball Team whose nickname was a bird. No, it wasn't the St. Marys Sparrows, or the St. Marys Pigeons...what was the name? John Pauline was the first to name The St. Marys Bluebirds! Congratulations! 5/31 Fill in the missing words. In 1986,_____________ became the _____ ________ __________ at 132. Nancy Klawuhn said the missing words are Tim Witmann, State Wrestling Champion. She wins. 5/23 Two St. Marys High baseball players have the same family name as a pitcher who achieved fame with the Pittsburgh Pirates. What's the first name of each? And the last name of all three? And Tom Lenox of the Dagus Mines Road said it's Josh and Frank Beimel of St. Area Flying Dutch and Joe Beimel of the Pittsburgh Pirates. 5/11 Legion Baseball soon will be on the scene. Name the longtime manager of the Legion team way back when. His first name and nickname were the same as a President of the United States, who came from Plains, Georgia. Hint: If you know the first name, then think of the last name of a St. Marys Police Chief, a business man named Raphael, and hundreds of other Elk Countians. Then....you'll have the answer. Joe Posteraro was first with the name of Jimmy Goetz. Congratulations, Joe. 4/6 Name the 13 year old who had the honor of helping to broadcast the wrestling match in which his brother won the District 9 Championship. Terry Dietrich, WKBI's Sports Director, asked this young sports fan to join the group at Clarion and the rest is history! And, we overlooked the correct answer. Betty Walter, who works with Larry Pisani, the champ and Garet, the sportscaster's mom, knew, and had sent in the answer. So, we apologize to Betty, and to Garet, and his brother, the champ, and to their mom! 3/8 Why were these Elkers honored after the end of football season: Kyle Huber, Beau Iorfido and Joe Sampson? Cheryl Herzing of Polk Avenue, Ridgway, knew they were named to the Big 30 Team. She wins! 2/24 A few years ago, all of these people passed something from one to another. What did they pass? Marty Prokop, Chris Caruso, Ben Brazinski, Ian Gerg, Dan Gleixner, Steve Leuschel, Kurt Becker and Joe Gerber. First with the right answer is Joyce Mosier, of the Shelvey Summit Road, who said they passed the baton; they were on the Elk Catholic Track Team, and passed the baton in the relay. She wins! 2/7 Hey, we're on a roll. Think of a school nickname that is a different name but actually the same animal as a city near falling water between two lakes. The School is south of Elk County, the city is north. The answer is the Clearfield Bisons (or to be politically correct, the Clearfield Bison, since the plural of Bison is Bison, just as the plural of deer is deer, not deers). And the City is Buffalo, New York. Eileen Garner figured it out. 1/11 Four schools- One nickname is of a nocturnal bird, another a bird of prey, another that is a national celebrity, and the other is almost a crocodile. Gotta get all four. Margaret Pauline of Fern Road did it! Bird of prey: Coudersport Falcons, a national celebrity: Punxsutawney Chucks (Ground Hog Day), Almost a crocodile: Port Allegany Gators, and a Nocturnal Bird: Bradford Owls. 1/7 What school do these athletes attend: Brandi Belloti, Brenda Colgan, Brooke and Kendall Klawuhn, Jenna Kielbowick, Shaina Buhler, and Cecelia Patterson. And, it didn't take Kelsey Klawuhn long to recognize some of the names and tell us that these are kids from Ridgway Area High School. 1/4
We need to make the questions tougher! So, here's a very complicated one: You take the name of an Ohio City with the same last name as a President of the USA. Then, you take his first name, and drop the G. You have the nickname of the sports teams of an area school. We didn't fool Jack Pauline of Fern Road, St. Marys- he knew right away it was Grover Cleveland, who turned into the Brockway Rovers. Hey, it's fun! Congratulations, Jack! 12/27 What area sports team would Jerry Mathers probably root for?Tom Lenox was the first to guess this one- The DuBois Beavers. (Remember Leave it to Beaver on tv?) Tom lives on the Dagus Mines Road, and wins the prize! 12/21 Here's one that Jesse Marino isn't allowed to guess: "His initials were "MM". He was a big Johnsonburg sports booster. He helped with lots of different sports for kids. He wrote and broadcast sports. Who are we talking about? Laura Clark was first with the right answer: Mike Marrone. Congratulations, Laura. 11/16 We'll give you three first names and three last names. Match them, and tell us what sports team they play for: First Names: John, Robert and Anthony. Last Names: Imbrogno, Yonter and Bauer. OK. Now, go to work! Gee, we thought this would be easy. OK. We'll give you a hint: 50 years ago, the team had a longer name than it has now. And, the first correct answer came from Lloyd (Bud) Windnauer, of the Ridgway-Johnsonburg Road: Anthony Imbrogno, John Yonker, Robert Bauer. The Johnsonburg Rams used to be known as the Ramblers. He wins! 11/4 See how good your cryptographic skills are: What team? 3-18-21-19-1-4-5-19. Laken Lenox of Dagus Mines Road figured it out right away. CRUSADERS! Congratulations to the winnah! 10/4 He wrestled at 132 and won the state title in 1986. Who? Lynn Young was first of a group of right answers. It was Tim Wittman of St. Marys. Congrats to both. 9/19 What well-known Elk County sports figure had the nickname "Babe"? Jordan Lenox answered with Stan "Babe" Horvatin's name, exactly at the same time that we were closing the contest, but his email was marked before we said we had no winner. So, Jordan wins! 8/25 Why is the name Greg Puncheon inscribed in the all-time sports history books? Lynn Young of St. Marys knew Greg won the State Wrestling Championship at 152 pounds. Congratulations to both Greg and to Lynn. 7/31 What type of sports would these people be most involved in: Pat Struble, Bob and Steve Meholic, Keith Simons, George Schneider, Rob O'Leary, and Keith Simons? Kurt Swiftken was first to answer "Golf". Congratulations, Kurt. 7/22 New question: "My dad was an All American at Bucknell, and he played there from 1936 to 1940. He made a 94 yard run from scrimmage against Penn State, and the record never was broken, because the old Beaver Field no longer exists. They also played in the Sugar Bowl that year. Bucknell used to be a major college team. My dad also played Pro Football for 2 or 3 years with the Brooklyn Dodgers under Jock Sutherland, who was the coach." Who are we talking about? Hint: Think of "The King". Think about the longtime Johnsonburg Football Coach. Think about what we enjoy, and what we breath. That's his last name. And, the answer to this question came from another son, who asked that his prize be donated to a local charity, which it was. The answer, of course is Frank "King" Funair, of Johnsonburg. He was a wonderful coach and also a great teacher. Congratulations to the entire Funair family on having a great dad. What team has these players on its roster? Dan Hnath, Jesse Bosnik and Chris Zampogna? Jordan Lenox of Kersey answered this quickly, with this answer: "Elk County Catholic boys varsity baseball team? Right! 5/1 No winner on this one. Who was the very popular Sports Editor of the St. Marys Daily Press in the late 40s and early 50s? He later moved to DuBois and became Editor of the Courier Express. The answer is Herb Martin. Margaret Pauline knew this one right away: "What Athletic Park is named after the same things that a town just outside of Johnstown is, except it's backwards?" She guesses the park is Berwind Park and the town is Windber. She remarks that last Saturday (Feb 28th), she was there watching the St. Marys High School Dance Team. Congratulations, Margaret! 3/4 What sports record did Tim Wittman bring home to Elk County in 1986? And, mljjy (the screen name) correctly identified him as a State Wrestling Champion, and is the winnah! Congratulations! 3/1 Well, this question was up for a whole month and nobody guessed it. "What sports team is named after two puppies. Hint, they both have the same name?" Post1234@dubois.key-net.net solved this one and the email didn't arrive until after we had given up. 2/29 Laken Lenox of Kersey filled in the blanks in this one: "Distinguish which of these are Elkers, which are Lady Dutch, which are Crusaders, and which are Ramettes: Tara Lindgren, Elker, Kali Carnovale, Dutch, Becky Boylan, Ramettes, Claire Posteraro, Lady Crusaders, Megan Beveridge, Lady Crusaders, Danielle Brennen, Elkerettes, Cheryl Franco, Ramettes, Laura Pelgrin, Lady Dutch, Andrea Stahli, Ramettes, Shay McCray, Lady Dutch, Annakaye Gier, Elkerettes, Ashley Mulcahy, Lady Crusaders, Molly DeFrain, Lady Crusaders. Congratulations, Laken. You win the prize! 1/24. Nancy Klawuhn was first with the answer to this one: "Get out your cryptography decoder and tell us what this team is: 4- 21- 20- 3- 8" Nancy says it's "Dutch" as in the Flying Dutch of St. Marys Area High School. She wins. 1/23 Many years ago, St. Marys Central High School had a great basketball team. What was their nickname? Hint: What school replaced Central? Adam Ehrensberger was first with the correct answer: Crusaders! 1/14 If you were an Army Cryptographer, you could figure this out easily. Using letter substitution of adjacent letters, give us the name of the team: D M J F Q T. Lynn Young was first to tell us it's "ELKERS". E is next to D, L is next to M, K is next to J, etc. She wins the prize! 11/13 OK. Let's stay in "the Burg" and ask what the Johnsonburg High School Rams' nickname was before it became the Rams. Laken Lenox was first with the correct answer to this one "What area sports team reminds you of Wally, Ward, June, and Eddie Haskell? " And, of course, the answer is "The DuBois Beavers". Laken wins, and as soon as he emails us his postal address, his prize will be sent.. 5/9 No answer on this one: "Why do people remember the name Bill Cutler in Elk County Sports?" This year, his grandson threw out the first pitch. Name the event." The answer is "The Jim Werner Classic" Chelsea Bloam knew this one right away: "What was the name of the semi-pro football team in Johnsonburg in the 50s?" She said it was the Johnsonburg Shamrocks, whose name is carried on now by the Midget Football Tam in "The Burg".
